Calcn. of the mol. diagrams from the state of spin (Vroelant and D., C.A. 44 3321h; V., C.A. 44, 3752h) shows that the positions most reactive toward substitution in polynuclear hydrocarbons should be as follows: for pyrene (I), position 3; chrysene (II), 6; triphenylene (III), 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12; benzo[c]phenanthrene (IV), 1 and 12; naphthacene, 5 and 12; benzo[e]pyrene, 3 and 6; benzo[a]pyrene (V), 6; dibenz[a, h]anthracene (VI), 7 and 14; dibenz[a, j]anthracene, 7; dibenz[a, c]anthracene (VII), 9 and 14; perylene (VIII), 3, 4, 9, and 10; picene (IX), 4 and 9 ; benzo[g]chrysene, 11; benzo[a]naphthacene (X), 13; and coronene, the 6 external bonds. In the case of I, V, VI, VIII, and X these predictions are fulfilled by exptl. facts. In II, III, and perhaps IX, steric factors cause positions other than those predicted to be most reactive. The other hydrocarbons have not yet been studied, but in IV and VII steric factors may also alter the reactivity.
