Volume 7: Compounds of Groups 13 and 2 (Al, Ga, In, Tl, Be ... Ba)
This volume of Science of Synthesis is concerned with the organometallic, metalloorganic, and
organic chemistry of the elements in groups 13 and 2 with the exception of boron, which will be
discussed thoroughly in Volume 6 of Science of Synthesis. The chemistry of these main group
organometallics and metalloorganics has been studied over a long period of time. However, the
most important achievements have occurred rather recently. In fact, recent advances in various
analytical technologies have allowed us to understand details of many reactions involving these
classical reagents. In light of the clear elucidation of various mechanisms, we now recognize
the real role and usage of these metal reagents to be even greater than first anticipated many
years ago.
The structure of this volume follows that established in the other organometallic volumes of
Science of Synthesis, i. e. the material is organized into methods for the synthesis of the
product class in question, with each method usually including a discussion of the scope of the
method, examples, and an experimental procedure. The product classes are ordered according to
the Science of Synthesis guidelines. A further section titled Applications [of the Product Class]
in Organic Synthesis is utilized when the product class is employed as a reagent or catalyst in
organic transformations. Synthetically important but uncharacterized complexes are also described
in this section.

Volume 9: Fully Unsaturated Small-Ring Heterocycles and Monocyclic Five-Membered Hetarenes
with One Heteroatom
This volume covers the synthesis of three- and four-membered heterocycles with maximum
unsaturation and of five-membered hetarenes with one oxygen, sulfur, selenium, tellurium,
nitrogen, or phosphorus atom. Maximum unsaturation means that the ring doesn't contain
either a sp3-hybridized carbon atom or a heteroatom incapable of pi-conjugation.

Volume 11: Five-Membered Hetarenes with One Chalcogen and One Additional Heteroatom
This volume is the third in Hetarenes and Related Ring Systems (Category 2) of Science of
Synthesis and deal with five-membered hetarenes with one chalcogen and one additional
heteroatom. Throughout this category, a hetarene is considered to be a heterocyclic ring with
a fully conjugated perimeter of pi- or nonbonding electrons. Also, potentially tautomeric systems
with a hydroxy, sulfanyl, or amino substituent are included when conjugation is possible at least
in one tautomer. In the present volume, this formal definition leads to quite different types of
five-membered heterocyclic ring systems including the 1,2- or 1,3-arrangement of two chalcogen
atoms to give cationic rings, as well as 1,2- or 1,3-combinations of a chalcogen atom and a
nitrogen or phosphorus atom. The latter group comprises well-known ring systems such as oxazoles
or thiazoles, but also less well-studied ring systems.
In each case, not only monocyclic rings are considered but also annulated derivatives,in particular
benzoannulated systems, and other examples of arenoannulationand also hetarenoannulation. When
convenient, syntheses of these derivatives are covered together with the chemistry of the
monocycles, otherwise they immediately follow the chapter on the corresponding monocyclic system.
A separate chapter is devoted to the chemistry of tri- or tetraheterapentalenes, which have a
particularly interesting electronic structure.

Volume 12: Five-Membered Hetarenes with Two Nitrogen or Phosphorus Atoms
This volume covers the synthesis of five-membered heterocyclic compounds with either two
nitrogen or phosphorus atoms or five-membered heterocycles containing both one nitrogen
and one phosphorus atom. In accordance with the common principle of the series, the
benzoannulated systems are treated directly after the monocyclic systems. The indazoles
and benzimidazoles, the benzoannulated systems of pyrazoles and imidazoles, are so
important that they are treated in separate chapters. In fusing a five-membered heterocycle
containing two heteroatoms to a six-membered ring, one of the heteroatoms can be common to
both rings. For these systems, the heterocyclic systems and their analogues containing one
or more heteroatoms in the six-membered ring were combined in the same chapter, as long as
the synthesis of these compounds proceeded via a ring-closure of the five-membered ring.
The same rule was observed for the phosphorus and arsenic analogues:the azaphospholes, the
azaarsoles, and the diphospholes.

Volume 13: Five-Membered Hetarenes with Three or More Heteroatoms
This volume of Science of Synthesis includes a wide variety of five-membered heterarenes
containing three or more heteroatoms in the ring. The types and arrangements of heteroatoms
in these structures are great. Many of the structures that contain combinations of carbon
with nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur are well-known to most organic chemists, but others that
contain elements such as phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, and selenium among the heteroatoms
are much less familiar. Most of the known ring systems that include combinations of these
heteroatoms are included.

Volume 14: Six-Membered Hetarenes with One Chalcogen
This volume of Science of Synthesis is concerned with six-membered hetarenes with one chalcogen,
i.e. pyrylium salts and pyranones together with their sulfur, selenium, and tellurium analogues.
As with other volumes of Science of Synthesis, it is the synthesis of these hetarenes which is
the dominant topic; their chemistry is covered only when relevant to their synthesis, or in a
few instances where it leads to generally useful synthetic procedures, e.g. the Diels–Alder
chemistry of pyran-2-ones.
The chemistry of pyrylium salts and pyranones has been studied for a very long time, indeed
since the beginning of modern organic chemistry. Hence, many of the references included in this
volume date back to fairly early work, although the literature coverage continues up to the end
of 2002. However, both pyranones and pyrylium salts retain considerable industrial interest up
to the present day, the former because of their biological activities and the latter owing to
their use as dyes. So despite their age, the compound classes covered in this volume are of
considerable contemporary interest and are likely to remain so for many years to come.

Volume 15: Six-Membered Hetarenes with One Nitrogen or Phosphorus Atom
Volume 15 describes the methods of synthesis of six-membered hetarenes with one nitrogen or
phosphorus atom. It follows the volume dealing with six-membered hetarenes with one chalcogen,
and precedes the volume with sections on six-membered hetarenes with two or more heteroatoms.
As the present volume deals with major hetarenes such as pyridines, quinolines and isoquinolines,
including the related pyridinones, quinolinones and isoquinolinones, it is very substantial in
size. These rather mature hetarenes together make up approximately 75% of the volume content.
The remaining nitrogen heterocyclic systems, the quinolizinium salts, naphthyridines, acridines
(and acridinones), and phenanthridines (and phenanthridinones), are relatively short but no less
interesting in their particular ways. The sections on the related phosphorus systems are also
relatively brief, reflecting the rather recent but nevertheless growing development of this area.
