Friends:
We heard from Fred Basolo's daughter Peggy that Fred died this morning, apparently of pneuomonia. Peggy told me many times of the warmth and comfort that your cards and visits brought to Fred in his final days. The family has not made arrangements yet, but I will update you when I hear from them.
As most of you know, Fred celebrated his 87th birthday earlier this month. He may have set a record for the longest time on the NU staff: over 60 years! I feel like
I am preaching to the choir, but for those of you who did not get to know him well, Fred was always the most enthusiastic supporter of the university. He either
recruited many of the now established faculty to NU or was instrumental in their decisions to build careers here. Fred had a major impact on so many lives, both locally
through his warm mentorship, and globally through in his leadership in the international science community. His son-in-law set up a web site celebrating Fred's amazing
career (http://www.fredbasolo.com/).
Fred be remembered as one of NU's greatest champions,
Tom
