To prevent the formation of harmful halogen-contg. waste and to improve the productivity of a sulfide group-contg. mercarptocarboxylic acid ester, the title compd. HS(CHR1CHR2S)nCH2CHR3CO2H (R1-3 = H, or lower alkyl, n = 1-5) is made by adding 1 of the thiol groups of a dithiol compd. to an acrylic acid ester deriv. Thus, Me acrylate was added dropwise over 1.5 h to a Me2CO soln. of ethane-1,2-dithiol and Amberlist IRA 94S catalyst at 70-72° to give ester product in 88.9% yield.

Soaps are stabilized against rancidity and discoloration by the incorporation of 0.005-5% of a compd. of the general structure, XSCH2CH2CO2R, in which R is H or an esterifying group and X is a univalent hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radical. The compds. are prepd. by the addn. of mercaptans or other compds. contg. the SH group to CH2:CHCN followed by acid hydrolysis of the resulting nitrile. For example, EtSH 62 is treated with CH2:CHCN 53 in the presence of piperidine 1 part as a catalyst. The reaction is exothermic, and cooling is necessary. After 2 hrs. the reaction mixt. is di...
