R1O2C(CH2)nCO2R2 (I: n = 5-11; R1 = glyceryl, R2 = H, glyceryl) in pharmaceutically acceptable carriers are used as dermatol. applications for reducing pigmentation of freckles, acne and liver spots. Esterification of azelaic acid with glycerin gave the mono- or diglyceryl azelates (depending on stoichiometry) which were tested and judged superior to conventional products in half-face comparison tests against liver spots, freckles and acne.
