Abstract:
The title compounds, useful as epoxy resin curing agents, are prepared by the condensation of 2-substituted or 2,6-disubstituted anilines with HCHO in the presence of an acid catalyst. Thus, a solution of 135 g. 2-ethylaniline, 90 ml. concentrated HCl, and 200 ml. water was cooled to 18°, treated with 40.5 g. 37% HCHO, heated 5 hrs. at 50-60°, and filtered. The residue was dissolved in water and 32.3 g. NaOH in 200 ml. water was added, precipitating an oil which was separated, dried, and distilled The fraction b0.7 199-200°, consisting of 82 g. amber oil, was collected and refrigerated, giving a solid m. 44-6°. Recrystallization from 1:1 hexane-benzene gave colorless crystals of 4,4'-methylenebis(2-ethylaniline) (I), m. 45.5-6.5°. Other compounds prepared similarly were (aniline starting material, b.p./mm. of product, and m.p. of product given): 2-isopropylaniline, 173-5°/0.3, -; 2-sec-butylaniline, 186-8°/0.3, -; 2-(2-hexyl)aniline (II), 200-2°/0.2, -; 2,6-diisopropylaniline, 215-18°/0.5, 66-7° (EtOH); 2,6-di-sec-butylaniline (III), 196-8°/0.3, -; 2,6-di(2-hexyl)aniline (IV), 213-15°/0.2, -; 2-sec-butyl-6-methylaniline, 190-2°/0.5, -; 2-isopropyl-6-methylaniline, 180-2°/0.2, 73-4° (EtOH); 2-ethyl-6-methylaniline, -, 84-5° (EtOH); 2-(2-hexyl)-6-methylaniline (V), 191-3°/ 0.2, -. Several of the substituted aniline starting materials were prepared by alkylating aniline with olefins in the presence of Al and AlCl3 (compound and b.p./mm. given): II, 68-71°/0.2; III, 79-83°/0.4; IV, 108-10°/0.2; V (from 1-hexene and o-toluidine) 71-2°/0.2. A 188-g. portion of bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin resin (Epon 828) (VI) was heated to 80°, mixed with the stoichiometric amount of curing agent at 80°, blended, deaerated by centrifugation, poured in a mold, and cured 2 hrs. at 85° and 16 hrs. at 150°. The pot life of resin mixtures was determined by mixing 10 g. VI and the equivalent amount of curing agent at 100° and determining the time required in a 100° oven for the mixture to become unpourable [curing agent, heat-distortion temperature (ASTM D648-56) of cured molding, and pot life (min.) at 100° given]: I, 120°, 65; 4,4'-methylenebis(2,6-diethylaniline), 157°, 280; 4,4'-methylenebis(2,6-diisopropylaniline), 163°, 280; 4,4'-methylenebis(2,6-di-sec-butylaniline), 143°, 360; 4,4'-methylenebis-(2-ethyl-6-methylaniline), 166°, 220; 4,4'-methylenebis(2-isopropyl-6-methylaniline), 168°, 220; 4,4'-methylenebis(2-secbutyl-6-methylaniline), 153°, 290.
