Dude, as you know, some people overestimate their skills.

First and foremost, we have to find a way to make it truly bilingual. I mean, the sub-forum titles and all that stuff. The way it is now, see, "Board index » курилка » лицом к лицу"... it just sucks. Probably there is already an add-on or something.
A decent domain name (I guess you have a dozen or so up your sleeve, huh?) may also add some charm.

Separate domain name will separate community as well... Current community is pretty much interested in transfeerring their communication experience into bilingual environment... I am afraid if we try to split domains there will be no visitors.. Or it will take much longer time to get them there. There won't be any use of current domain force. Thus I have strong doubts on this.

As to Russian names of forums... Yeah that sucks. Maybe there is PHPBB mod for making it bilingual...
BTW as to current almost zero activity in the second English thread (in "Exchange.." forum) I think there is not many Englich visitors yet.. So the only count is onto Google. This is very much like a stat-up.

Well... Each and every page of forum contains Russian name of forum it belongs to as well as thread name..
Moreover most nicknames are in Russian....

Wouldn't having the forum indexed by the search engines in English make it much more possible that (God forbid) smb from the publishers could 'discover' exchange

That's exactly why we need the "bilingual" mod in the first place.
As I see it: all the "thin" text pieces, including forum names, user names, user profiles and whatever else we find suitable, should exist in two variants and be shown either in Russian or in English depending on the environment, just as interface elements do. As to the bulk of the messages, each one should be flagged with the language where it belongs, to be displayed here and stay hidden there, or vice versa.

I meant, if a large number of English-speaking chemists is attracted to the forum, some of them can enjoy communication but be fans of copyright, and upon discovering the exchange... maybe I'm being paranoic

Yes, me too, I think that the administrators should think first of how to attract copyright lovers and only afterwards of how to keep them away.

I guess that the Russian and ex-Soviet users (let's call them core users) with good English can be really bilingual, but most Europeans and Americans don't know Russian.
