VOC EMISSIONS DIRECTIVE

Following the decision by the European Parliament to adopt legislation reducing the quantity of solvents used in paints, varnishes and car repair products, the European Council of Paint, Printing Ink and Artists's Colours Industry, (CEPE), said that it welcomed the final adoption of the regulation. (ECN 12 April).

In a statement CEPE secretary general Jean Schoder said that: 'Our industry supports the reduction of VOC emissions from coatings wherever technically possible and economically reasonable. The directive also offers the opportunity for a level playing field in the EU countries'.

Having taken some ten years to put in place, CEPE added that the directive 'builds on work started by CEPE in the early 1990's, but takes into account current and projected knowledge as well as the requirements of the key players'. The EU paint industry is said to consider the directive challenging but workable.
