A new statistical method is used for calculating the heat content, heat capacity, heat of combustion, heat of formation, physicochem. data of vaporization, ionization potential, dissociation energy, b.p., and critical parameters. The mol. weight, main moments of inertia, and symmetry data are necessary for calculating the entropy and free energy function, whereas the electronic energy levels, character of restricted rotation, and vibrational spectra are not required. The method was applied to organosillicon, organometallic, and inorganic compounds Furthermore, it can be used for calculating the thermodynamic properties of radicals and reaction rate characteristics.

Enthalpies, entropies, and heats of phase transformation for some halogen-substituted silanes, disilanes, and disiloxanes were calculated by the use of simple equations. The values were determined at 760 mm. Hg. The deviations of the calculated values from exptl. results for H-free compounds were 7-20% for the m.p., 0.2-1% for the heat of vaporization, 1-3% for the enthalpy, and up to 10% for the entropy. For H-containing compounds larger deviations were obtained. Such values can be used for orientation purposes only.

Fluorination of Si2OCl6 by the Swarts reaction yielded large quantities of SiF4 Si2OF6, (b. -23.3°), Si2OCl3F3 (b. 42.9°), smaller quantities of Si2OCl2F4 (b. 16.8°) and traces of two other gases whose composition could not be established definitely. One of the two was thought to be Si2OClF5 (b. about -5°) and the other Si3O2F8 (b. about 20°). The only evidence that the monochloro derivative, Si2OClF5, was formed was the short plateau in the time-temperature curve at about -5° upon distillation of the mixture The completely fluorinated derivative, Si2OF6, was obtained in good yields, was readily purified and gave readily reproducible physical constants and analyses. Si2OCl3F3 is formed in preponderantly larger quantities than the other chlorofluorides, notwithstanding the great variation in reaction temperature and pressure. The fact that large quantities of SiF4 were evolved in the reaction gives rise to the question as to source of the gas. Vapor-pressure data are given for Si2OF6, Si2OF4Cl2, and Si2OF3Cl3.

Crossed anodic condensation of RCO2H [R = CF3CF2OCF2, CF3OCF2CF2, CF3CF2CF2OCF(CF3)] with HO2C(CF2)nCO2Me (n = 1-3) in 10:1 MeOH-MeCN containing NaOMe at 4 A, with c.d. 0.15 A/cm2 and intial electromotive force 16 V gave 7 corresponding RCF2CO2Me (I) in 24-34% yield, along with corresponding R2, RH, and MeO2C(CF2)2nCO2Me. Alk. hydrolysis of I gave RCF2CO2Na, which were dried and pyrolyzed at 250-80° to give CF3O(CF2)mCF:CF2 (II; m = 1-3) and CF3CF2CF2OCF(CF3)(CF2)pCF:CF2 (III; p = 0, 1) in 64-92% yield. II (m = 1,2) and III (same p) gave ≤65% epoxides (e.g., IV) with H2O2 or O2 under pressure. IV isomerized in the presence of SbF5 or CsF to 87-96% CF3O(CF2)3R1 (R1 = COCF3, CF2COF, resp.).
