107 g of VI was dissolved in a mixture of 200 mL of anhydrous chloroform and 107 mL of conc. sulfuric acid.
With stirring solution of 43 g of 98% nitric acid in 50 mL of chloroform was added dropwise at 0 C.
Reaction mixture was stirred at 0 C for another 2 hrs, then washed with water, then with 30% aq. NaOH, again with water, and dried over CaCl2.
Solvent was distilled off in vacuum. Obtained 119 g (90.7%) of VII with mp 104-105 C. Found: N 5.52%, Br 32.31%. Calculated: N 5.74%, Br 32.74%.
